What says summer more than dining outside next to your brand new pond-less waterfall?

Pondless waterfalls function in a manner very similar to traditional waterfalls, the only difference being that instead of the water collecting in a basin, it passes through a hidden filter/pump and is recirculated.

The result is a beautiful cascade of water that tumbles over natural rocks and seems to disappear into a small collection of pebbles at its base. These unique water features have all of the aesthetics of a pond, but in a more compact and low maintenance package.

Additionally, pondless waterfalls can be installed without much hassle in townships that have tough restrictions about the ponds depth because they have no dangerous pool of water.

Fortunately, pondless waterfalls are easy to install with installation taking only several days. Completed waterfalls are surrounded with plants to make them appear as though they fit right into the surrounding environment.

Chris Orser Landscaping would love to help turn your backyard into a summer oasis by installing a pondless waterfall. Call us today at 215-249-1236 for your free consultation.

Create a lasting first impression! Make the entrance to your home or office more inviting by adding a unique walkway. Add character with winding or staggered designs that consider the use of garden accents, such as benches or a bird bath, lighting, and containers filled with brilliant colors. You could even add a small patio to the entrance of your home. Or how about a fountain, pond or a waterfall.

Adding any type of landscape or hardscape project to your home, does much more than just improve the appearance of your home. They are also well known to add value to your home. Winding garden paths can entice even the least curious of creatures, as they wind and turn off in the distance. A garden path or walkway can be simple and elegant, or very elaborate and formal, depending on your design style.

The best way to tie together your outdoor living spaces is to connect the areas with a path or walkway, inviting your guests to further explore the outdoors. Show off your treasures, by placing them throughout your property, and displaying them to get the best visual effect with additional accent lighting.

Our expert stone masons have many years of experience installing flagstone, EP Henry pavers, bricks, meandering paths, and walkways of all materials, and we look forward to working with you to achieve whatever look you desire.

Nothing acts as a better focal point to a garden then a water feature. Be it an elegant waterfall that splashes into a pond, or an elegant fountain, among many other things, moving water acts as a wonderful buffer against the ruckus of a neighborhood during summer. Apart from soothing sounds, tranquility and beauty moving water brings to a garden it also brings all new types of bird life and even toads and such. Recently, water features have become much more self-sustaining and efficient to install. Less maintenance for you means more time enjoying your landscape, not working on it. Other water features include fountainscapes, pondless waterfalls, rain gardens, and rainwater harvesting systems. If you would like to meet with Chris or one of our designers to discuss the addition of a water feature to your property, please give us a call at 215-249-1236 to schedule an appointment.

Don’t let “OLD MAN WINTER” take the life out of your lawn and landscape environment.

Chris Orser Landscaping, Inc. is providing your neighborhood community with all around “winter protection”, at reduced winter pricing.

We would like the opportunity to help you protect your lawn and landscape investment by offering you the following dormant season services:

• Lime treatment to your lawn. This corrects the acidity level in your lawn (raises the pH), and results in an overall higher quality of turf.

• Anti-Dessicant spray for broadleaf evergreens. This liquid application will help reduce damage caused by windburn and loss of moisture. It also protects trees and shrubs from winter desiccation.

• Dormant season pruning – cold weather pruning not only causes trees and shrubs to go dormant, but insects and diseases are all shut down for the winter season. There is much less risk of spreading infectious diseases, and no risk of insects burrowing into pruned cavities.

While in the neighborhood, allow us to give you our free Professional Lawn Care analysis and estimate for the upcoming 2008 growing season.

Chris Orser Landscaping, Inc. is committed to providing you with the highest quality standards in customer service year after year. If you would like a free estimate with no obligation, or if you have any questions please feel free to give me a call.

“Will winter ever end?” is the question on many a landscapers minds who are struggling with the endless snowstorms hitting the vast majority of the United States and the good news is that “YES!” the snowstorms and blizzards will end. The bad news? It could leave behind mold and mildew if necessary landscaping precautions and steps are not taken. Snow mold and mildew is the yucky aftermath of heavy snowstorms and could wreak havoc on all landscaping, lawns and gardens.

Snow mold can be identified by two identifying qualities-it’s a fungus that grows after the snow melts and is either gray or pink in color. Gray snow mold grows on the leaf or the blade of a plant while pink snow mold, the worst type of snow mold, infects the crown of the plant.

Landscaping efforts to remedy this are to focus on keeping the lawn and garden areas dry. Of course, when the lawn or garden is covered under a thick sheet of ice or a few feet of snow, this isn’t possible. What is possible, however, is ensuring the lawn is not covered during the first initial weeks of spring or when the snow melts and warmer temperatures return. A second step is to get outside in the chilly temperatures and rake the grass to loosen any potential mold. Landscapers might feel a little silly getting outside with a rake in sub-zero temperatures, however, it is necessary to ensure a healthy mold-free lawn for spring.

Many landscapers, professional and amateur, also dread the after storm brown patches that are caused from dry, humidity free air as the snow melts. A lawn or garden that isn’t watered properly are more susceptible to brown patches after a winter storm-yes, even when sitting under a thick sheet of ice or a few feet of snow. As the snow melts, the air remains so dry and the melted snow does not provide enough moisture that a lawn or garden can retain.

Avoiding nitrogen rich fertilizers and maintaining a consistent watering schedule in the spring, summer and fall will greatly help aid and will lessen the amount of brown patches seen in lawns after the cold temperatures of winter.

Landscapers are also encouraged to check every few weeks for new mold growths, for mildew growths and for the early appearance of brown patches to ensure spring will bring a healthy mold-free lawn or garden!

Once the snow ends and the temperature increases, homeowners should look out for springtime challenges like powdery mildew, fungus, mushrooms, and other warmer weather diseases. For now, waiting for the last of winter to pass and restoring your lawn to health is a good next step.

Before you do anything else to your yard in the spring make sure your beds are prepared to host plantings. Be sure to remove any debris or leaf refuse left over from the fall, and apply a pre-emergent weed control to stop foreign seeds from germinating. A three inch layer of fresh mulch should be applied and the entire garden should be edged to give a clean appearance. To receive professional advice and to set up a consultation visit http://www.orserlandscaping.com or call (215) 249-1236. You might also consider supplementing your garden beds with compost or manure mixture to give your existing plants a boost. Or slow release fertilizers will do wonders for your plants in the garden. When it comes time to add new greenery be sure not to step in the garden to prevent soil compaction. Chris Orser Landscaping, Inc. can prepare your beds for you and even plant some spring annuals at your request. Give us a call today and we’ll get your beds into tip top shape!

Your Landscape can tame the wind!!!! The trees and shrubs you plant can not only make your property look better, trees and shrubs can help you with your heating costs. When you disturb the flow of winter winds and breakup the wind, you in effect make it easier to heat your building. Studies have shown how trees are helping to conserve energy and save money for homeowners. Researchers in the Chicago area found that one 25 foot tall tree can cut heating and cooling costs for homeowners between two and four percent. The trees accomplish this by providing shade in the hot summer months and blocking harsh winter winds. By doing more of this ‘sun smart landscaping’ around your house, you can trim your energy bills up to 20%. The kind of tree you plant has a lot to do with your savings. A great choice is a deciduous tree with open crown that will lose its foliage early in the fall and leaf out late in the spring. Otherwise, in northern areas like Pa, the leaves would block the warming southern sunlight in the winter. Trees that work best here include many varieties of maples. If you have a large lot, placing a row of Arborvitae to block the wind before it contacts your house can provide a decrease in wind speed at your house. The higher the Arborvitae, the more wind you will block. The arborvitae will lower the wind speed causing less heat loss from your building.

As the Christmas trees are now packed away (or recycled) and the New Year has been welcomed in, visions of spring have begun dancing through many a landscapers minds as they plan out their design plans for their lawns and gardens. However, just because the holiday season is over doesn’t mean the winter season is over. In fact, for many parts of the United States, the winter season has just begun and coming along with the winter season are winter storms.

Preparing landscaping for winter storms can be just as frustrating as dealing with the storm itself. However, taking precautions to protect lawns and gardens is vital to ensure a healthy lawn and garden come spring time. The biggest threat for landscaping is ice. Ice forming on or around hardscaping, around trees, bushes, flowers and vegetation can wreak serious havoc by either a) causing all plants/vegetation to die off or b) causing tree branches or hard scaping to crack, break and fall.

In order to prevent lawns and gardens from freezing or dying off due to extreme weather conditions from winter storms, take the following precautions and steps to ensure a blooming lawn for spring:

1. Bring all potted plants indoors or under an awning or inside a garage. Exposing them to indoor heat could also have negative effects, so just be careful when storing them.

2. Cover all plants with a drop cloth and then drape a plastic over the top. (Make sure that the plastic isn’t lying directly on the plants to prevent ‘freezer burn’ [seriously!] )

3. All plants that are covered, need to be completely covered. Anchoring down these drop clothes with rocks, poles, sticks or mulch can ensure they drop cloths will not blow away if cold winds blow through.

4. Before the winter storm arrives, water all plants. Adding moisture will allow them to stay ‘warmer’ through the cold than dry plants.

5. Add mulch, lots of mulch. Pack all mulch around plant stems, tree bases and flower beds to help add a layer of nutrients, retain moisture and protect roots from the cold.

6. Make sure all greenhouse (if applicable) are closed and sealed tight. Allowing cold air to get in could kill all plants inside.

7. Be patient.

Winter storms are never a fun condition to get through and even worse is allowing a winter storm to ruin all landscaping efforts. Check, double check and triple check that the above efforts have been made then grab movies, a cup of hot chocolate and wait the winter storm out!

The word “landscape” usually invites visions of rolling green lawns, picturesque statutes, gorgeous flowers and neatly trimmed bushes and for many homes who hire a landscaper (or homeowners who choose to do it themselves) this is usually the case. However, for city and condominium dwellers, the word “landscape” could be as much as a square patch of grass to something as small as a potted plant on a balcony. Smaller spaces, however, shouldn’t deter those with green thumbs. If anything, these smaller spaces should be welcomed as a platform for creativity and as an ability to really turn a small space into a small oasis.

1. Step One: Landscaping Materials

The biggest concern when landscaping for smaller spaces is materials. Are plants needed? Are flowers needed? Mulch? Stone? As a professional or amateur landscaper, consider the size of the space first to be able to consider what materials will be needed. Soil, stone, mulch are usually safe options for smaller backyards, decks and balconies as they can be incorporated into a multitude of mediums.

2. Step Two: Assess The Space & Design

Balconies could benefit more from hardscaping. A long, rectangular pot filled with soil and mulch could operate as a bed for flowers and plants. Placing taller plants or trees in the corners could add to the aesthetic quality and for those who aren’t fearful of “weeds,” draping faux vining* around the railing could create nice scenery. Additions such as tall lamps, lounge chairs and chaises and lanterns could add also add to the landscaping.

Decks that are slightly larger could actually have areas to serve as gardens. Selecting out a space, filling the area with soil and mulch and surrounding it with stone could create a gorgeous deck side garden. Growing flowers, plants or even small strawberry plants could not only create a nice area but also smell nice! Adding trees, shrubs, faux vining, lanterns and incorporating hardscaping such as statues, oversize stone and rock (as decks allow for more space) can also be used here.

Small backyards are usually harder to work with due to the conflict of space versus the all of the creative landscaping options and ideas. By narrowing in one corner or one select idea will allow the greatest utilization of the space. Stone hardscaping usually works best for these area as well as mulched garden spaces, as these areas help to break up the area and divide the space up.

3. Maintenance

The biggest inhibitor from turning these smaller spaces into a landscaping oasis is maintenance. More often than not, these smaller spaces frustrate the homeowner or renter and maintaining the space becomes a last item on the to-do list. By constantly maintaining and updating the space often the area will stay fresh, neat and landscaped!

*use faux vining as real vining are actually weeds and could overcome surrounding plants

“An apple a day, keeps the doctor away,” might be a time old cliche but it’s a cliche that is slowly becoming an end result in the world of landscaping; edible landscaping that is. Edible landscaping is the new trend hitting major cities across the United States and is becoming largely influenced by a new environmental group titled ‘The Lawrence Fruit Tree Project.’ This effort is widely encouraging landscapers, home owners, foodies and fruit lovers alike to plant fruit and nut trees instead of regular plants and flowers into their landscaping design, in their backyard or even on their front porch.

The main idea and goal behind edible landscaping is not to only incorporate fruit and nut trees but also to encourage individuals nationwide to depend on their resources and to educate individuals on not only the health benefits but the environmental benefits of incorporating fruit and nut trees.

‘The Lawrence Fruit Tree Project’ is also investing funds into instructing seminars, assisting students and even handing out materials to those who desire to plant individual trees or those who wish to plant an entire orchard. The edible landscaping efforts of this project has ‘stemmed’ far and wide from plantings alongside the streets of New York City to planting small orchards on college campuses.

Although the chilly temperatures of winter are still lurking around many parts of the United States, as spring arrives, begin thinking how an apple tree or a strawberry plant could be incorporated into the lawn or garden design. Not only will this be a fun project for family and community members alike but will add to the aesthetic quality. Never before has landscaping been so delicious!
