Interior Design as an Academic Discipline

Interior design is a kind of an academic discipline which studies a great variety of things starting from art theory, composition bases and ending with architecture, electronic and supply services. Interior designers combine artistic and practical solutions in one structure in order to create a necessary interior.

Planning a design is a creative act; successful realization of an idea requires professional experience, fine aesthetical taste, and laborious task. Interior designers are busy in the sphere of projecting cottages, apartments, penthouses, offices and specialized shops interiors and always expand their field of action.

Design of Furniture and Interior Shop

Planning a design of a specialized shop, for example, one, which sells furniture interiors, a designer should take into consideration that this is a specific, unconventional sphere for a decorator. Uncommonness of such interiors is that such interior is not a living room; the main aim is to create a home atmosphere and at the same time to exhibit furniture and accessories. A customer should have an opportunity to value each of goods in a domestic surrounding. One shop usually offers different interiors, such as dinning and drawing rooms, bedrooms, private offices and other interior designs. Each of them is unique and planned exclusively for a customer.

The Process of Interior Designers Work

Interior designers’ work starts from a style choice and concept development. Designers prepare drawings and plans, and fulfill a project in aquarelle or three-dimensional modeling. Also they choose accessories, such as clothes, carpets and rugs, sculptures, pictures, vases, plants, etc.

Interior design reflects the inner world and character of people who choose to live in this or that interior. Harmony is the main basis of style philosophy. Interior design creates special atmosphere and mood. Usually designers work in team with artists and repair-and-renewal gangs.

Modern day interior designers seem to be working overtime and with a reason too, as people have revitalized the needs and demands for interior design plans for their homes. Until some years back, interior design plans used to resemble a collage, but nowadays, people seem to prefer simplicity. Add to this the fact that people now want to go green with their homes, and you would know that the job of an interior designer is an envious one alright!

Here are the top 4 interior design trends for 2010

1. Green design is the need of the hour – A lot of homeowners have gone green with their energy needs, as a result of which interior designers have had to make last minute revisions to their interior design plans. Though having a green design for homes may not change a lot in terms of power and energy savings, it still gives the home an eco-friendly look. Thus, artificial plants make way for natural plants in homes.

2. Rich combinations like gray and magenta also find favor – The combination of gray and magenta is often considered to be mercurial in nature, resulting in a lot of people going for this combination due to their interest in having a contrasting design.

3. Sense of reality takes over fake design things – Today, people prefer using real and natural design examples rather than using artificial designs and designs that come close to being called natural designs. By doing so, people wish to be appreciated for their originality in the interior designs of their homes.

4. Milder colors in use – As an interior design industry trend coming through in 2010, a lot of homeowners prefer using lighter color shades like beige, off-white, pale yellow and so on to add touches to the walls of their home. This is a big difference over the last few years as people have moved over the traditional light pink and light blue.

On seeing the top 4 interior design industry trends, you would clearly know that things are changing in the domain of interior design. It is important for interior designers to alter their plans to suit their client needs. For the money they pay, people don’t want anything less than perfection.

Art is something a lot of people love to participate in because it is creative and fun. Even though many people love art, not many will attempt to pursue a career in art because of the unsure nature of freelance artistry. Most people do not want to be worried about where their next meal is coming from.

However, there are ways to make a living while pursuing your artistic desires. With an interior design degree, artistic-minded people can be involved in many aspects of art and design, and get paid for it too. There is a good deal of collaboration between interior designers and gallery owners, architectural firms, and other related businesses to help put together homes, commercial buildings, and even schools that look beautiful and polished.

This is a technical degree. There is a good deal of technical skill and knowledge required to become a professional in this field. As a general rule, a bachelor of fine arts in interior design is required for employment in entry-level positions in the architecture and design world.

However, you may also gain entry into the field with an associate degree in interior design. An associate degree in this can help you get a job as an assistant to an interior designer. Additional training on the job and further education can help you move up into an apprenticeship program with either an architectural firm or a design firm.

In order to become a licensed or certified interior designer, you will need three years of work experience and a bachelor’s degree in interior design. If you complete an internship during college, that experience counts towards your three-year experience requirement. You must then complete the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam. Upon successful completion, you may become certified or licensed, depending on the particular requirements of your state’s licensing board.

There are many types of jobs for people who are interested in the field. For people who are interested in architectural design, architectural interior designers create and plan the furnishing and equipage of various interior spaces in conjunction with architectural firms, as they are being designed and built. This may encompass creating for commercial, as well as residential spaces.

Although interior designers do choose color palettes, fabric, and furnishings, that is not all they do. Often, interior designers will work in collaboration with architects to create specific design elements that tie a project together. Additionally, interior designers who specialize in lighting are very important to the successful completion of most jobs. If a designer completes a degree at the graduate level in interior design, they will have the expert knowledge required to teach at college level.

What with the explosion of interior design programmes cropping up on TV, the career of the interior designer is starting to look much more glamorous and appealing, and an awful lot of people are looking into becoming an interior designer. However, the path to becoming the next Oliver Heath or Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen can be rather confusing.

As with an awful lot of careers in creative industries these days, there are now recognised qualifications available that are growing to be more expected. Most of the interior designers of yesteryear would have learnt their trade on the job, but as New Labour pushed more people into university, the breadth of courses available similarly ballooned, meaning that a BA(Hons) in interior design will be entirely expected. To get on to one of these courses, you may also be expected to have completed an art foundation year, although having an excellent portfolio can be enough for some institutions.

WorkThe life of an interior designer is not perhaps what people may expect. Whether you want to get into residential design, restaurant interior design or club design, there is an awful lot more business involved than you might think. If you are lucky enough to get a full time job working for a larger company, you may get to just design all day, every day, but as with the majority of creative industries, a lot of interior designers are freelance.

Being freelance means that you will have to spend a significant amount of time trying to get work, and a lot of this sort of work isn’t directly advertised, so you will have to spend a lot of time networking.

Similarly, there is a lot of administration involved in interior design, you have to order the right amounts of materials/fabrics, have a clear project plan that encompasses deadlines, tasks and contractors, as well as being acutely aware of planning legislation and the like so as not to violate any local planning laws. Most clients will expect a well put together project plan so they can understand when the work is going to happen, what it will be, and how long it will all take.

SpecialismWith so much knowledge required to be an interior designer (art, architecture, by-laws, business administration, project management) it is worthwhile specialising. The first broad category you will need to decide on is residential interior design or commercial interior design. Commercial can be broken down into various enterprises: club design, office design, retail design, restaurant design and so on. Each area needs certain knowledge about how the space will be used and so how to design to make the best use of the property, however, there will be certain similarities, for example, club designers and restaurant designers probably have many of the same skill-sets, so you may not need to specialise so narrowly that you shut yourself off from a lot of work that you can do. If you’re very good, you may not need to specialise at all, just make sure you are aware of the different requirements for different sorts of projects.

Boom/BustFinally, be aware that the boom of interior design shows on TV coincided with a property market boom, and have now only continued because the shows themselves have become popular. With the house market in a more precarious position, and many businesses still struggling, don’t expect to become an interior designer and have a deluge of work come your way. It will be tough, but if it’s what you love, you can do it.

Keeping your staff happy while they work is important. Small things like complimentary snacks in the lunch room can work wonders, but for an even bigger effect, try complementing your working environment with a new coat of paint and furniture. The right office interior design can work wonders on team morale and productivity, as well as reflect your business positively to clients and customers. All businesses should consider upgrading their office interior design regularly, to help keep their office environment fresh and at optimum working capacity. There are a few prime points of consideration when creating a functional office interior design. Colour and design are perhaps the biggest priorities, as these can really liven up an office interior design and introduce a new energy and mood. Moreover, you need to keep your employees and clients from becoming bored in your environment. No matter how exciting your business is, there will be moments of boredom or fatigue in the office. A dull office interior design can massively compound these negative feelings, and reduce productivity and efficiency. Especially towards your clients, your business must exude a fantastic attitude at all times, through fantastic office interior design.Lighting is also of great importance in planning a new office interior design, particularly natural light. Fluorescent lighting is often harsh on eyesight, overall functioning and general comfort, so if your building lacks natural light, consider alternatives like incandescent lighting. If your office interior design budget has room, you might consider taking out your existing windows and replacing them with larger ones.Your office interior design should also strongly facilitate interaction between your employees, promoting good working habits like collaboration, teamwork and discussion. Considering employee and workstation proximity in your office interior design plan will mean you can tailor your office environment to just the right levels of productivity, while neither encouraging overt socialising or unpleasantly isolating your workers. There are plenty of ways to tread this fine line in your office interior design planning, such as using mid-height barriers for office partitions, and soundproofing for closed offices.Subtle touches like indoor plants can improve an office interior design, not only aesthetically but also by creating a more natural, less stifling working environment. Indoor plants help improve air quality inside, and can liven up an office interior design – even if everything else is bland. It is also imperative to use ergonomic furniture in all office interior designs, to minimise work-related injuries such as repetitive strain injuries, bad posture and worker fatigue. Ergonomic design does not mean boring. These days it is very easy to find ergonomic furniture to complement the look and feel of your office interior design. Choosing furniture that looks good and complements your workers is the best desicion you can make when planning your office interior design.
